Westonbirt Book Festival Michael Morpurgo

Event Photography, Capturing Literary Legends

Heliexpert recently went out on assignment to take photographs of literary Legends at the Wild Wonder Book Festival at Westonbirt Arboretum. Although our photography is often done with drones we also take a lot of snaps on the ground. We’ve worked with Westonbirt for a number of years on a variety of different projects and are very proud that they called us to take photos of this event.

Held over a weekend at the height of summer, the wild wonderful Festival is in its first year. We attended on the busiest day, the bank holiday Monday. On the bill were a list of literary legends including Michael Morpurgo, Cressida Cowell, and Hannah Gold. In case you haven’t heard of these guys Michael Morpurgo wrote War Horse, Cressida Cowell wrote How to Train Your Dragon (later turned into a Hollywood blockbuster animated movie), and Hannah Gold is the 2022 winner of the Waterstone’s children’s book prize.

The event was a joy to photograph and it was great to see so many families enjoying books and authors rather than iPads and apps.

Unfortunately, we aren’t able to share images of the happy, smiling children but here’s a selection of pics of the equally happy authors and entertainers.

Event Photography Challenges

We captured various talks and workshops over the course of the day including a craft session in the woods with Yuval Zommer, charcoal drawing, and rip-roaring presentations from Michael Morpurgo and Cressida Cowell. The photography was at times challenging with a broad range of lighting conditions and sometimes fast-moving subjects (kids!).

As professional photographers, we rose to the challenge and our clients at Westonbirt Arboretum were absolutely delighted with the results.

thank you. They’re fab, and capture the event really well.
